Dhaka University Admission Topper Anannya Ganguly Did Not Die Due to Communal Reasons

Recently, a post circulating on the social media platform X featuring several pictures included a caption that read: ‘Ananyo Ganguly, who achieved first place in the admission test of Dhaka University, was found dead today.’ The post was later shared from another X account with the caption: ‘He was more intelligent. He was far more handsome than any “kanglu”. Obviously, out of jealousy, he was killed by the “kanglus”.’ (Translated)

It is worth noting that many, especially Indians, mockingly refer to Bangladeshi Muslims as ‘kanglu’.

That is, it has been claimed that Ananyo Ganguly, who stood first in the DU admission test, was murdered for communal reasons.

Fact Check

The Rumor Scanner team’s investigation reveals that the claim of Ananyo Ganguly, who secured the first position in the DU admission test, being murdered for communal reasons is not correct. In reality, according to his family, he committed suicide due to long-standing mental agony. No reliable evidence was found to support the claim that he was murdered.

Investigating this matter, a report published on February 01 titled “‘Suicide’ of Ananyo Ganguly who stood first in the DU admission test” was found on the website of the online news media ‘The Daily Campus’. One of the photos attached to the viral claim was also found in this report.

Regarding this, the report stated that Ananyo Ganguly died on January 31. Ananyo Ganguly secured the first position in the 2021-22 academic year admission test of the ‘D’ unit of Dhaka University and got admitted into the English department. The report noted that Ananyo had been struggling with mental health issues for a significant period. The family believes he chose the path of suicide out of that mental agony. Ananyo’s father said that although his son was meritorious, he had been mentally ill for quite some time.’ The report also mentioned that before standing first in the Dhaka University admission test, Ananyo was away from studies for about five years due to various reasons, including mental illness after entering college.

Searching with relevant keywords regarding this, similar information is known from multiple other media sources. No hint of any communal violence was found anywhere in this, nor was any evidence found supporting the claim that Ananyo was murdered.

Therefore, the claim that Ananyo Ganguly, who stood first in the DU admission test, was murdered for communal reasons is misleading.
