Indian youth uses AI video to spread communal propaganda about Bangladesh

Recently, a video has been circulating on the internet where a young man, walking and speaking in Hindi, claims to be in Bangladesh, saying: “This is Bangladesh. It is night now. They will finish us off like Dipu Chador. You can see for yourselves what is happening. Please share this video as much as possible so someone can save us. I don’t understand how everything changed so suddenly…” (Translated from Hindi).

Behind the individual, shops can be seen burning in flames.

Fact-check

The Rumor Scanner team’s investigation found that the video in question is not real. In fact, an Indian youth named Kuldeep Meena created and circulated the video using Artificial Intelligence (AI), which later spread with claims that it was real.

At the beginning of the investigation, an observation of the video showed a Bangladeshi flag flying behind the youth. Beside it, a signboard on a shop is visible. Usually, signboards for shops in Bangladesh are written in Bengali or English, but the signboard in the video was observed to have Hindi writing.

Additionally, the youth in the video addresses someone by the name ‘Dipu Chador’. However, a relevant keyword search revealed that on the night of December 18, in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, a group of workers from the same factory beat and burned a garment worker to death over allegations of insulting religion. The deceased youth’s name was Dipu Chandra Das. Therefore, the name was also mispronounced here.

Further investigation into the origin of the video led to an Instagram reel published on December 24 from an account named ‘tarobhaikuldeepp’. This video matches the one in question.

Upon observing that post, it was noted that it also carries an AI label.

Subsequent observation of the ‘tarobhaikuldeepp’ Instagram account revealed that several other such videos about Bangladesh have been posted from that account. See them here (archive), here (archive), and here (archive).

Observations of the videos show that they all contain AI labels. Furthermore, verifying the video in question with an AI detector showed a 96.6% probability of it being AI-generated.

Further investigation into the Instagram account ‘tarobhaikuldeepp’ shows that it is an account operated from India and was opened in 2020.

This confirms that the circulated video was created using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Therefore, an AI-generated video is being circulated with the claim that a Hindu youth in Bangladesh is living in fear of communal attacks, which is completely false.
