Old Bangkok video circulated as footage of a building collapse in the Bangladesh earthquake

An earthquake was felt in various parts of the country at 10:38 AM on November 21st. According to the Meteorological Department, its magnitude on the Richter scale was $5.7$. Following this, a video was posted on social media claiming that this scene of a building collapsing is from this earthquake.

Fact Check

The Rumor Scanner Team’s investigation found that the circulated video is not from Bangladesh. Instead, a video of a building collapsing in neighboring Thailand, caused by tremors felt there following an earthquake in Myanmar in March of this year, has been circulated with this claim.

Since the circulated video contained the logo of the mainstream media outlet RTV, the same video was found on the media outlet’s YouTube channel, posted on March 28. Although the description of the video provided information about a multi-storey building collapsing due to an earthquake, the location of the incident was not specified.

However, it is confirmed that the video is not from the recent time period.

The same video footage is also available on the website of the British news agency, BBC.

The BBC reported that a $7.7$ magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar at a depth of 10 kilometers on March 28, followed by a strong aftershock. Workers were seen running for safety from the site in the Chatuchak area. This is a scene of a high-rise building under construction collapsing in Bangkok.

A report from Prothom Alo states that the earthquake was also felt at that time in neighboring Thailand, Bangladesh, Vietnam, China, and India. Intense tremors were felt even in Bangkok, which is approximately 1,020 kilometers away from the epicenter.

Therefore, the scene of a building collapsing in neighboring Thailand, caused by tremors following the March earthquake in Myanmar, has been circulated as footage from the November 21 earthquake in Bangladesh, which is false.
